Note: The rock tree inside the temple is modeled after the Emancipation Tree in Virginia. It was under this tree that the first black people received an education in 1861 although it was illegal in the state, and it was under this tree that the Emancipation Proclamation was read aloud for the first time in Virginia. It is a powerful symbol of freedom, and a reminder, during these polarizing times, of how we need to come together, and that we all belong to each other.
